Shark Attack Risk Low And Declining

Slim chance of shark attacks, according to California-focused study

  • Scuba divers are 6,897 times more likely to be hospitalized for diving-related decompression sickness than for white shark bites.
  • Ocean-goers are 1,817 times more likely to drown than die from a shark attack.
  • Scuba divers have a 1-in-136 million chance of being bitten.
  • Surfers have a 1-in-17 million chance of being bitten.

While the number of shark attacks in California remain constant ( 1~2 per year) the number of people in the water is much greater.  Since 1950 the ration of shark attacks has dropped by 91%.  In fact, more people are killed by toasters each year then sharks attacks.

As you can see from the numbers above, when it somes to sharks it is better to be a diver under the water than a surfer on the surface.
