Wreck Diving
Beaufort/Morehead for NC Wreck Diving, Lets' Go!
This is the 3rd best wreck diving in the world. 1st is Chuuk Lagoon (aka Truk Lagoon, Japanese fleet sunk there in WWII - far Pacific). 2nd is Scapa Flow (German fleet scuttled there in WWI - Scotland / cold). 3rd is North Carolina with over 1700 wrecks off shore.
We often go in the spring for NC wreck diving. This is one of the best times of the year to dive the wrecks. Waters are warming up and conditions are usually quite good. Very often mild seas and lots of visibility.
Though a long boat ride out, the dives are some of the best you'll do. We rotate amongst the various wrecks and have been visiting old friends we haven't dove in years. There are 2 new tugs down that we'll definitely add to our list. We dove them last year and they were great!
Expect 2 1/2 hour rides out and back. Generally we start with one deep dive (approximately 100 to 130 feet deep). Then motor back in toward prot for a secodn dive between 70 and 100 feet deep. there is usually a surface interval of about an hour including the time spent motoring in. Waters are temereate. Often a 3mm is plenty or 5 mm if you tend to get cold. Nitrox is a must. Longer bottom times mean you can see more on each dive and visit more sites.
