South Florida Wrecks and Reefs
January 12th, 13th, & 14th.
Join Ken and Mary for a weekend of diving the wrecks and reefs of Pompano Beach, plus an optional 3rd day of diving at the famous Blue Heron Bridge.
We'll arrive Friday night and stay at the Sands Harbor Resort And Marina to be ready to dive Saturday morning. Since the boats leave from the marina at Sands Harbor it doesn't get any easier. After our dives we'll return to our base at the Sands Harbor Resort to get ready for our group dinner Saturday night. Sunday it's off for another day of diving.
Part of the South East Florida Reef Tract, Pompano Beach diving offers over 100 different sites in close proximity to shore. One wreck in Ship Wreck Park that we hope to dive is Lady Luck, a 324 ft. long tanker at a depth of 60 feet at the top of the mast and 126 feet to the bottom. Known as the world’s first underwater casino, artist Dennis McDonald created a casino atmosphere with slot machines and gambling tables, complete with card sharks and octopus dealers! Lady Luck has great fish life trying their hands at the table! Advanced Open Water or equivalent experience is recommended. An AOW course is available during the trip..

Another possible wreck dive to be included is the Aqua Zoo, in 50 - 72 ft of seawater surrounding the Sea Emperor wreck. Suitable for Open Water divers, the marine life inhabiting the zoo includes southern sting rays, Goliath Groupers (200-300 lbs.), nurse sharks, and eels. Let’s go play in the Zoo!
For the second dive of the day, we’ll likely be drifting parallel to shore in 40 - 70 feet of water. We should be able to stay in the Gulf Stream where water temperatures are in the 70’s, with visibility at least that far. Beautiful coral, sponges, and colorful fish are frequently joined by lobsters trying to avoid being your dinner!
Blue Heron Bridge in Phil Foster Park is arguably the best shore dive in the Greater Fort Lauderdale area. We’ve dove there before and encountered a diversity of marine fish life in about 15-20 feet of water. Although somewhat elusive to us, the site boasts a population of sea horses, pipefish, and flying gurnards. With better-than-average public beach facilities, the Bridge also includes an 800-foot-long artificial reef in 6-10 feet of water, perfect for snorkeling.
